Interested!
I probably can’t make that with work, it’s a big conference in Denver and I have to be there. Might try to catch another workshop!
Im happy to help if the dates work out. Regardless of location id suggest bringing a 2x4, 4x4 and a 8”± log. Its helpful to have a long approach and clear area in which to wipe out. Especially for the log!
Howdy all, I was able to scope out IMI in person today, and I think it will work well for our purposes. Thanks for the tip, Rich! Also took a lap or two around the other tracks, and it’s definitely something worth doing if you haven’t before.
The obstacle area is a bit madmax and underdeveloped, but there is a good range from driving over a 2x4, to individual logs of various sizes, stacks of logs, and an 18” square edge step up on a stack of railroad ties in case anyone’s feeling frisky. Additionally, I spoke with the staff and they were OK with us relocating objects within reason, but were careful to reiterate that since this area is not an official track, the riding would be “at our own risk.” In practice, this means that there is a higher than usual risk of flat tires, and we should all have our Tetanus shots up to date.
Here are a few POV vids from today if you want to get a sense of the vistas available to us east of I25:
Looking forward to leaping logs and leaving the ground with everyone!
Head count!
In light of other developing plans, who is still interested in a big bike obstacle workshop/track day at IMI this Saturday?
I will still be happy to do this if only a couple people are interested. I would very much like to create an opportunity for area riders who like to train in addition to just riding. If you find joy in improving your skills, want to feel more comfortable exploring by yourself, or to create a safety margin of skill then I hope you can make it.
Who is this event for? The target audience is anyone who considers themselves beginner/intermediate and would like some direction and encouragement around tackling obstacles in a focused environment - OR - anyone who considers themselves an intermediate/advanced rider who would benefit from some focused practice time and is willing to offer direction and encouragement.
Why?
Riding is fun. Big bikes are comfortable. They are the most reasonable means of travel, and allow vast mileages and diverse to be explored quickly and effectively. However, their drawbacks are evident. Many ADV riders are afraid of their bikes. Weight and seat height are serious and reasonable concerns. Consequently, many of us have waited to practice really riding these bikes until we find ourselves tired, perhaps alone or far from assistance, and overloaded with gear and tools. This is the worst time to safely push yourself and learn the limits of your bike and your riding. It is much safer to practice rested, and with no destination to reach further down the trail.
Isn’t a dirt bike better for rough terrain?
Yes, but I’m not going to ride one over 300 miles in a day of everything from interstate to singletrack and still be able to walk afterwards, or ride multiple such days in a row. There’s always a more specific tool for the job, but ADV bikes are generalists on purpose, it is their nature. We can expand our scope of travel and enjoyment of that time by developing riding skills.
Join us at IMI Saturday the 18th at 9am.
5074 Summit Blvd, Dacono, CO 80514
The track charges a $30 a day entrance fee, payable at the front gate.
Take a left after you enter, then take a right in the first parking lot and head towards the UTV tracks in the back. The enduro areawhere we’ll meet is in the center of the compound on your way to the UTV track.
I’ll be in Moab, but this is great, and I hope folks go. I’d 100% be there on my Aprilia doing stupid things ![]()
Nice! Enjoy Moab! I just left this morning, actually.
I’m opening to doing more of these in the future if people find it helpful.
Congrats btw!
I gotta work all day saturday, but I have been to IMI on my big bike before and it’s super fun. I would love to do it again sometime.
You might consider adding a poll to get a tally of attendees.
Still interested and interested in the Sat ride too…
This is still my plan unless there’s not enough interest
Cool! Let’s do it. I’ve been looking forward to it since I got it on the calendar.
What time?
Meet at 9am.
I originally committed to this and am looking forward to it. Getting my tetanus shot today and will see you guys there ![]()
@Michaelmichaelmoto @ChrisMunro Dave and I had a fun morning riding around IMI. We hit the atv motocross tracks and then the enduro area to practice jumping logs and rocks and such until the wind and dust storm kicked up. I finally remembered to take a picture of my bike during one of her naps!
