Slab it over Berthoud Pass to Frazier, take dirt Crooked Creek over Williams Fork Range past the Henderson molybdenum mill, then slab pass Green Mtn Res. Then all dirt (about 100 miles) over Sheep Creek Divide over to Piney Ridge, down to Radium, cross Colorado River and out of the “Trough”, take dirt road up the Gore Range north to Rabbit Ears Pass. A little pavement to a very nice dirt aspen forest short cut to the Kremmling hwy. From there head home. 99% easy peasy stuff except for one small spot on Sheephorn Divide that is not very hard just a bit harder. Lots of remote stuff on this ride. If you’re lucky we might even see a wolverine on Piney ridge, I did see a wolverine once on Piney Ridge but it was camped and at sunrise. Would need to meet early, take a lunch and maybe get some dinner out in Granby. I would take my KLR 650 cause there is nothing hard core on this ride (unlike last weekend with Leighton). I could go on Sunday depending. You need a 150 mile fuel range. My KLR with BIG tank could share if needed. (If I get no takers / company I might just stay home and keep sanding my trimaran hull but this is the time to ride!) Esteban - Golden, CO
PS - Maybe stop for COFFEE in Idaho Springs or somewhere along the way!!!
at 7am, have breakfast and head out from there. If it is pouring rain we may cancel. Just some rain - no problema. If anyone else wants to meet us there. Bring rain gear and a lunch. This is not a hard ride but it is not a short little ride either. Love to have you if anyone else wants to join in. Steve 303.990.1040
PS - Rain means no dust
PPS - Since we will be heading west over Berthoud Pass we could meet somewhere along the way for you hillbillies not wanting to come to town.
The weather looks like it will be better to the W & NW of Denver. Kremmling, and Steamboat Springs at this time are calling for partly cloudy with no rain.
I got home 15 minutes ago after a 351 mile day. Lots of remote dirt and some fun pavement too. Nothing as difficult as what you and I did last weekend though but it was still a great day!
Here are a few photos from Dave M’s and my ride yesterday. It was long but all of it was fun - from leaving Denver in the rain to going over Berthoud Pass in the fog to the clear blue skies that were on the other side of the Great Divide. Our total miles were about 200 of pavement and 150 of dirt. We saw maybe one ATV and 3 cars on the 150 miles of dirt we rode yesterday. We crossed a lot of infrequently if ever visited areas (unlike many other more popular places in Colorado). Anymore you have to get away from Denver to get away from the HOARDS OF PEOPLE. I think it’s worth it to go far for that. When I asked Dave if he thought it was worth it? He resoundingly agreed.
Descending Piney Ridge we took a lunch stop high above the Colorado River and the 95F temps that lay below before ascending the other side towards Gore Pass.
At the bottom in the heat of Radium looking at the Colorado River and the same RR that goes from Denver through Rollinsville, the Moffat Tunnel, Winter Park - on its way to California.
