The Plan - W. Magnolia & Kingston Peak tomorrow 8/26 meet at 08:15 for coffee at Golden Diner.

An old ADVRider buddy of mine is organizing this ride. Only a few are going. I don’t think he will mind if some Boulder Fruits & Nuts come along. I want to be home by 3pm. Come along if you like but be prepared for a rocky, ratty, overused, front range, high altitude road. It should be a lot nicer on a weekday though. I suggest this is better on a single cylinder bike unless you are one of those 6’5” amazing riders. I am not so I will be taking my 450 exc. This is a rain or shine ride and will only be called off for catastrophes of biblical proportion (so I was told). Bring your lightning rod - LOL! Esteban

Sun, Fog, Rain and Rocks was the order of the day. Riding Kingston on a weekday in the rain and fog is the only way to go now that hoards of heathens have moved to Colorado. Not a single Razor, ATV, Side by Side, Polaris, or similar. Just one jeep all day long - Nice!

Met up with Ethan on his AJP for a leisurely breakfast and coffee at the Golden Diner. A bit later Tobin showed up on his KTM 350. I was on my 2006 KTM 450 EXC and loving that bike. Rear brake issues were plaguing the AJP and we spent multiple times working on it - overheating fluid pressurizing the caliper - SMOKIN !! As Jim Carey would say.

Went to Boulder via 93. Got my 450 up to 90mph today and she still had more in her. Then took Baseline over back side of Gross Res. This is a small side loop off 68J.

Gross Dam - I’m looking like an old geezer!

Tobin watching while we screw up the rear brakes on Ethan’s bike.

Sugar Magnolia blossoms blooming heads all empty but I don’t care!
Took Magnolia Rd to west Magnolia area.

Oops, Tobin bit the dirt and hurt a couple fingers unfortunately.

Unfortunately Tobin’s finger was not so easily fixed as Tobin’s forks.

Tobin’s finger was hurting a lot so he decided to go on home.

Ethan and I decided to very carefully and slowly ride by the cop’s house in Tolland and up Mammoth Gulch and onwards into the sky (and fog and rain).

The road up Kingston Peak.

Here is a photo taken at the same spot from another year on a clear day.

My new Clearwater lights

Looking down 2000 feet towards South Boulder Creek.

James Peak peekIng thru the fog.

Fearlessly Ethan went forward up the hill of death into the mist.

Then it was my turn.

Unbeknownst (I like that word) to me somehow I passed Ethan and was able to catch his emergence from the fog and conquest of the perilous climb.

And there, behind us lay the actual Kingston Peak. 20+ years ago I used to organize a full moon ride up to the top of Kingston to watch it rise over the eastern plains. We were very careful to leave no tracks. Now there is an ATV track visible to the top.

Waay out there above Ethan’s front fender lay the next hill. This one used to be bad but is not anymore.

One of my favorite things to do on these rides is to stand around taking photos of each other telling each other how good we look in our outfits!! You’ll notice Ethan has the latest ensemble.

…and my color coordination is to die for

Up the last hill which is much easier now than it was 20 years ago.

There must be the ashes of hundreds of cremated people here. A little macabre when you think about it.

Like ashes of those who came before us we blew down the hill through Alice and a big worm on a mushroom smoking a hookah. We rode past thousand year old Bristlecone Pines (Ents) down down down through the heavy rain into the BBQ pit of Idaho Springs.

After a couple of hours of the staff not being able to chase us out of their nice DRY restaurant. Patrons even came up asking when we would leave as they wanted to see us ride away in the rain. We finally departed (in the rain).

Ethan went downhill towards Denver and I went up OH MY GOD Road. Not the newer zig zaggy one, the original straight OMG road that goes up the gulch - much faster.

Along the way I passed through the ruins of old Virginia City and gold mines.

Central City and then through Smith Hill Canyon where I saw 2 meese.

Onwards to Robinson Hill Road

Eventually popping out in Golden Gate Canyon (the original road to Blackhawk in 1860) adding about another 20 miles of dirt to my wet underwear. It was a G-R-E-A-T ride. Kingston was not all that bad, I expected worse.

It was a wonderful, wet, wild 110 mile day. Abrazos y Besos - Esteban

I had fun writing this report even if only 3 people see it. BCADV is a little slow and sparse I’d say.
