Being newer to ADV, and having camped a lot in the past, I’m also interested in hotel trips. Overnights with conveniences, but still with the riding and sight seeing.
Curious if there are others. Even more so, if others would be more interested in longer rides if camping was not the only choice.
Yes, I don’t want to camp outdoors much
Yes, I want to start with hotel, move into camping
I was looking for another option on the ballot - I love camping, but on a longer more serious adventure, I want a shower and a bed. I’m so old and beat up, sleeping on the ground is tough after a 10-12 hour day off-road. I like the idea of a hybrid trip as well, but you lose the advantage of not having to pack camping gear.
I’ve found that 2 nights camping, 1 day hotel, repeat, is a good compromise. Then keep your camping setup very minimal so it’s much less noticeable on the bike.
I was hoping more would respond or vote. I’m curious from an inclusion perspective, if a lot of new riders might be more inclined for big trips if hotel-based. Especially at ‘C’ level. Dirt and roads.
Totally anecdotal, but my experience has been kinda the reverse. New ADV riders get into it thinking how awesome moto-camping will be, do a couple of those, and then get good enough to ride hard stuff. At which point the riding becomes more important than the camping. It’s also why some tour operators like West38Moto and others are doing more hub and spoke tours. Or basecamp tours. Stay in one or two places and ride from there.
Really good insight. I’m a bigger fan of hub and spoke, generally, across most of my outdoor activities. Especially as I got older. Eventually swapped the tent for RV, or hotel.
I meant as a mix of riding, camping, and hotels if the goal of the ride is to travel. Multiday tour, riding to point.
Setting up a bascamp, either with truck / van or hotel and riding from there is great also. Moab, Crested Butte, Lake City, Montrose, BV are all good bases
