Panamint Springs, Hub-and-Spoke Ride, February 27 thru March 1, 2026 -- CANCELLED

I’m planning to do a hub-and-spoke flavor of ride on these dates, based out of Panamint Springs Resort, just outside of the west side of Death Valley National Park.

The riding would be Friday, Saturday, Sunday from the resort, with you getting yourself and bike to Panamint by COB Thursday. I would likely drive out on Wednesday and get in an extra day of riding on Thursday. Drive back Monday, or get a head start Sunday night.

Lodging:
Review their website. They have a range of lodging options, from a few small hotel rooms, to camping cabins, to yurts to RV / van / truck / tent camping. You’d make your own lodging arrangements.

The resort has a decent restaurant that offers a big breakfast buffet, at least 10yrs ago, when I was there last. Also has a gas station but be prepared to pay for the most expensive gas in CA, which is saying a lot $$$$$$.

Riding

  • Routes: I’ll put together 3x all day loops that will feature some of Death Valley’s Greatest Hits, both inside and outside of the park. Probably 160-200mi days.
  • This ride is best done on a big bike with proper tires, or a DS bike with lots of gas…and a comfortable saddle :call_me_hand: The distances in DV are big and we could find yourself burning 50-60mi of pavement over 2-3x passes to make it back to camp before dark.

Skills Required
Death Valley is not “true” desert riding. That is, not miles and miles of desert singletrack or wide open sand washes. Depending on the routes, there will be gravely canyons, a couple sorta-rock gardens, maybe some silt beds, etc. I would say endurance and competence in a variety of terrain is more important than true hard-enduro level of riding skill.

When I ride in DV I’m riding at maybe 50-60% speed, keeping a wide safety margin in reserve.

Weather
I’ve ridden DV in Jan, Feb, and Mar. By late Feb the high passes in / outside of the park should be mostly good, but those conditions will dictate route choices. But you can expect cold / cool mornings, multiple layer changes across they day, etc. Last time, mid Feb 2015, we rolled back into Panamint just before dark all layered up after having seen some low 30s and flurries.

Group Size
I’d like to keep the group size to 8, riding as 2x teams of 4 riders rather than one big 8 person squad. Maybe 10 if everyone is very solid. I likely already have 2 others on board with me, from side conversations.

Death Valley is extremely remote so I’ll have a list of mandatory comms, recovery, and survival gear. Last time my crew and I rented a satphone, but not sure how those sorts of comms have evolved since then.

Disclaimer
I will soon be launching an ADV coaching, training, and touring company. I will likely collect a nominal fee for this ride, as I did on my COBDR ride this year. I see this first iteration as a pilot ride, then turning this into a more comprehensive tour in 2027.
$ TBD, but it won’t be much.

As a data point, I’m interested in future like kind rides. I’m just not fully geared up with tech and I’m actively hunting for a mid-sized ADV platform …which would appear to be the call for such a ride.

To be clear, big bike isn’t necessary for this ride, I just wanted to clarify that it’s big bike-able, for those that want to ride one. I’ve done all of the stuff I have planned on a Husaberg 570, with stock tank. I just had to a carry fuel bladder to accommodate 150-180mi range. And very possible that we’d end a day(s) with 40-60mi of pavement back to Panamint, over some 4-6k passes in Feb. Nice to have a larger bike for that, but, not required.

As for tech, a phone based GPS app is enough. Don’t need to go crazy. And a radio…

Ok, that’s good to know. What’s the call to order for a radio …product name?

Look for our Radio SOP I believe in the Tech forum. Everything you need is in there

I won’t be attending but I’ll say that riding a motorcycle in Death Valley is an experience not to be missed. If you haven’t been, go.

Yep, this will be the start of some annual exploration trips to the Nevada and Southern California deserts. I know that stuff inside and out, and would love to share it with some Colorado peeps.

This might be something I can fit in as work is usually a bit slower that time of year. Exploring CA is top of my list right now. Prior to this year, I’d only been in California once for 2 days. I thought I loved Evergreen, but I would relocate to the central coast in a heartbeat if I found the opportunity.

Brainstorming routes:

Day 1: Ballarate, Goler, Mengle, Striped Butte

  • Exit the park and check out Ballarat, ghost town
  • Back in to the park via Goler and Mengle passes, maybe a very short detour to check out the remains of Barker Ranch, where the Manson Family was captured.
  • Checkout the Geologist Cabin and Striped Butte, then Warm Springs Rd to Westside Rd to Furnace Creek. Refuel, 120-130mi. Then scenic pavement back to camp, over a couple 4-5k passes.

Day 2: Titus Canyon, Teakettle Junction, The Racetrack, Hunter Mtn

  • Pavement back towards Furnace Creek.
  • Continue east and enter Titus Canyon.
  • Back into the park, ride towards The Racetrack, Teakettle Junction, and back to camp via Hunter Mountain.

Titus Canyon

Day 3: Cerro Gordo and The Salt Tram

Wanted to give everyone an update.

@MotoJason sent me this link last week, road closures in and around the park due to some major storm damage last month:

These closures would significantly impact what we could or could not explore. So, unless things improve dramatically, this ride is likely not worth the time and money investment to get out there.

I’ll keep everyone updated

RIDE CANCELLED

With all of the rain CA has been getting lately, I imagine that road conditions are only getting worse, so I’m canceling this ride.

That said, wet winters make for epic desert riding in Feb, March, and April…hmmmm
