Mountainbike ride Saturday 4/4/2026 Hall Ranch // Food and bevy after

I really am inspired to join you all on a future ride and get back into pedaling. This Saturday I have prior plans with someone to ride at Penrose on motos that are entirely too large for the location.

Fact @mulebarn

In! I’ll be on my Amish/analog bike.

I’ve got an extra Mtb for you if you promise to be more gentle to it than your motorized 2-wheelers.

BMA Bike patroller here, and you’re right about the messaging. We’re trained to only let folks know that ebikes aren’t typiacally allowed on open space.

Interestingly, a neighbor has a disability card and rides ebikes. They still aren’t allowed on a couple more technical trails in the county.

All OPDMDs Prohibited

  • Fourmile Link at Betasso Preserve

  • Bitterbrush Trail at Hall Ranch

  • Walker Loop at Walker Ranch

Curious - what’s the intent behind the ban? No distinctions made between types of e-bikes? Seems overly broad.

The reasoning was a mix of policy conservatism, user conflict concerns, and trail preservation. The trail preservation argument has thoroughly been debunked at this point (Class 1 e-bikes do not cause any more damage than acoustic bikes.), but the policy has not changed.

After having a stent that failed and a double bypass due to genetics, and having ridden trails like Hall Ranch (Bitterbrush) for 26 years, I’m not going to stop riding those trails because of that just because Boulder County doesn’t like my class 1 e-bike that allows me to keep my heart in a safe place. I did not want a e-bike, but I was forced to either choose that or not ride at all.

I know I’m not the normal case for e-bikes (though there are more medical-induced e-bikes than you’d think), but knowing that I will die much sooner than most people (I’m already not supposed to be here and have cheated death three times, and every day is a bonus for me.), I can’t let arbitrary rules like that prevent me from living my life and doing something I love with other people that I care about.

Hope to see you Saturday. We’re riding Bitterbrush down.

In BCPOS eyes, a bicycle is still non-motorized, but adding any motor = motorized and traditionally motorized usage was not allowed.

My neighbor’s in the same boat-ish - I’m glad he’s still riding, and he actually rides more often because its less stress on his body.

Wife’s birthday is Saturday, but I’m down for hitting a bike ride in the future.

Great ride, thanks @NikkiD for organizing, stoked that we’ve unlocked this BCADV add-on. More.

@NikkiD! Thanks for putting this together! What an awesome way to start the weekend.

There were eight of us out for the day, and even though Bitterbrush is super technical, everyone got down safely for pizza at Mainstage Brewing after the ride. Looking forward to the next one!

The video is from the climb up from town:

@Rich_Strauss went full LEO with that stache. That ought to stave off the trail patrollers.

Give me a month and mirrored sunglasses. Should be able to talk us out of any “situation.”
