Saturday, April 25: BoCo Intro Trail Ride - A, B, C Riders

Date: Saturday, April 25th

What: Organized ride to familiarize members with some of our “go-to” trails, so that we can all speak a common “trail rating” language.

Where: Community Plaza Shopping Center, Broadway, Boulder. Gas is available at the Circle K a few blocks north on Broadway. Show up with a full tank, ready to ride.

Who: A, B, C riders

When:

  • 9:30-50 — meet and greet
  • 9:50-55 — Riders’ Brief
  • 10:00 — KSU. This is a hard start time, not a suggestion

Route Overview:

  • All — Broadway > Mapleton > Sunshine Canyon > Gold Hill

  • A-Group — Switzerland Trail >CR 102 > P2P > Ned > Rollinsville > Tolland > Mammoth Gulch > Lunch Tree > Reverse to Rollinsville > Toss Pizza

  • B-Group — Switzerland Trail > Four Mile > Boulder Canyon > Magnolia> P2P > Rollinsville > Tolland Tunnel > Reverse to Rollinsville > Toss Pizza

  • C-Group — Gold Hill Rd > P2P > Ned > Boulder Canyon > Magnolia > Coal Creek > P2P > Rollinsville > Tolland Tunnel > Reverse to Rollinsville > Toss Pizza

Tracks

See files attached below. Notes:

  • _ALL – everyone does this route, to Gold Hill and then ends at the Switzerland staging area at Gold Hill Rd. From there, you’ll turn on / make visible the track / group you intend to ride with:
  • _A – track for the A-ride.
  • _B - track for the B-ride
  • _C - track for the C-ride

GPS / Tracks Best Practices:

  • In general, I like to load all of the tracks for a ride, even if I don’t intend to do those tracks, so that if something changes, I have everything I need on my device.
  • However, I only have visible the track I’m currently riding. The others are on my device but they are not visible = I can’t yet see them on the map.
  • Then, I record my track. Your device will often auto-select the color of this track.
  • Next, I’ll set the color of the track I’m riding to be a different color than the recorded track. For example, if the recoded track is green, I’ll set the color of the track I’m riding to not-green. I like red.
  • This way, and this is important, if I miss a turn I can instantly see where my recorded track (green) deviates from the track I’m supposed to be on (red).
  • Then, when I reach the end of the track I’m currently riding, I make the next track visible on the map

All of ^this^ is a bit overkill for this particular ride, but in the future if you’re doing a ride that uses multiple different tracks across the day, ^this^ guidance above is an excellent backstop to ensure (1) you instantly see when you’re off track and (2) the map of your device is only showing what you need to do know right now – the track you’re currently riding.

Admin:

  • Bring a good attitude, tools, water, snacks for the trail, full tank of gas. Gas is available in Ned if you need it mid-ride.
  • No: Semper I Guys/Gals, street tires, hard bags
  • GPS tracks will be published before the ride. Have them loaded beforehand
  • Radio comms: per club Radio SOP HERE. Program your radio before the ride.

++++++

This an “open house” ride, with both members and non-members welcome to ride with us as an opportunity for them (non-members) to vet the club, to determine if we are good for them and they for us. Feel free to invite your non-BCADV riding buddies.

Going forward, there will be both “Open Rides,” posted here where non-members can see them, as well as Members Only rides, posted in a closed forum and only visible to paid members.

I cant decide if im going to Moab or come hang with the crew.

Ill know for sure come end of next week.

This ride is an intro to how we do business and to the trails we often do.

So when we say blah blah is similar to Mammoth Gulch, or to Switzerland, we will all have a common point of reference.

What’s a rough ride time estimate on the day?

I might need to comp out a few hours for work or cut out early and head into work.

As a rule, I never try to estimate a finish time. Never know how they day will go and this one in particular will have some social stops: Lunch Tree at Elk Park for the A group, Tolland tunnel for B and C, pizza at Toss, etc.

we’re never very far from P2P so easy to bail and get home quickly if you need to

Looking like this will be a good turnout.

I’m unsupervised for about a week, including the weekend of this ride, so I’ll likely load up camping gear and camp…somewhere…after this ride. Dunno where though. Thinking about lower and warmer so maybe somewhere near Buena Vista.

I’ll potentially be camping too. But need to stay more local. Will wait to see what forecast looks like and gauge from there.

Same, maybe.

I’d like to do the A group on this one (I will be off the back, but still I like the route.)

Who wants to volunteer to lead the B and/or C groups?

Gah, gone with family for the desert. Hope to make the next one, great plan/approach

For those attending, one of the intents of holding the ADV 101 series was to provide everyone with a framework for how to organize and/or lead a ride. So while I’m organizing the ride and “leading” the A-group, the ride will organically break into smaller subgroups of 2-4 people riding together.

Therefore there should be no “need” for formal B and C group leaders, as we will all (1) have the GPS tracks for the ride and (2) everyone should know how to maintain accountability.

I’m planning on doing the C ride, but if I’m the only one I can jump on B. If C needs a person to “lead” it, I can do that happily.

You’ll be good for the B ride after the class this Saturday :+1:

FYI, weather is looking iffy for a ride up high next Saturday. We’re watching it and will adjust the plan accordingly. A ride next Saturday WILL happen, but route is TBD and weather dependent

Team,

The forecast is improving a little bit each day, with warmer temps and light rain predicted for later and later in the day. So, the ride is on.

Notes:

  • .GPX files (tracks) have been attached to the first post in the thread.
  • I’ve also amended the original plan for the B and C routes, so see those new route descriptions
  • I’ve also added “GPS Best Practices” to the original post
  • Temps will be cold, overcast, and possibly light rain after lunch at Toss in Rollinsville so be prepared.
