Hi everyone – I’m Rich Strauss. You can blame @mulebarn for dragging me into helping admin this group last year.
I started street riding in Georgia in the mid-80s through the mid-90s. The highlight of that era was a six-week, 12,000-mile solo tour of the American West on a CBR1000F—camping and shooting pool in small-town bars to earn money for food and gas.
In 1995 I enlisted in the Marines and served as an artillery officer at Camp Pendleton, ending as a Battery XO.
In 2006, while honeymooning in Utah on my Goldwing, I saw all these dirt roads I couldn’t ride. About four hours after getting home, I bought a DRZ400—and never looked back. Since then, I’ve been 100% dual sport and ADV, with zero interest in pavement. From 2006 to 2019, I explored California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. I’ve led too many group rides to count, helped lay out the LAB2V route for a few years, and put together countless multi-day rides in Baja on both big and small bikes. Sand is my default terrain. One of the biggest highlights was riding the Continental Divide Trail in July 2017—3,000 miles of epic dirt from Mexico to Canada.
My wife Kandi rides too, and I somehow lucked out with someone who loves camping off the bikes as much as I do. When we’re not doing that, we use our Transit as a mobile basecamp. We moved from L.A. to Boulder in 2019, then to Longmont in 2021, and we’ve really enjoyed exploring Colorado and Wyoming since.
After my time in the Corps, and after brief tour in the real world, I had a 17-year career as a professional triathlon coach. I started two coaching companies, founded the Pasadena Triathlon Club, and co-founded Endurance Nation—a national-level coached team. I raced 14 Ironmans, coached over 10,000 Ironman finishers, and led countless camps, clinics, classes, and group rides. I sold my stake in Endurance Nation in 2017 and transitioned into a land investment business.
The consistent themes in my life have been fitness, motorcycling, coaching, teaching, and building communities. Whether it was teaching 18-year-old Marines how to adjust live artillery, coaching athletes to race with power meters, or leading cyclists 100 miles a day across California, I’ve spent a lifetime helping people get better and bringing them together around shared passions.
I’m now channeling that into 2WheelsGood.us (website coming soon), where I’ll offer ADV coaching, skills training, and guided tours. Our first trip is later this month—15 BCADV members and I are taking on the COBDR together.
This transition has been a long time coming, and the coached ride I led recently for the club reminded me just how much of my skill set transfers to this space. I’m excited to contribute to this community, support fellow ADV riders, and help us build something truly special together.
Sorry, this is the most recent photo I have, from 1887.
