RSVP: September 24, 2025 - The Steamboat Color Cruise 🏍️💨🍂🍁

When: Starting Wed. September 24, lasting 3-5 days depending on what the route/desire is.

What: This will be a B Route by BCADV ratings. You should not be a beginner because there will likely be some rough stuff no worse than Switzerland, but this is also not a fast A ride mission. It’s a tour to take in Colorado scenery during (hopefully) peak leaf season, be patrons at food joints in small towns, take photos, and maybe wet a fly line for the last time in 2025 if you’re into that sort of thing. If I have my way, Starla (my wife) will be joining me on her CRF300LS ADV-lite, but she’s still TBD.

Where: The route is a bit TBD, but the idea is that we’ll take dirt and backroads toward Masonville, Laramie River Rd. to Wyoming, over to the northern terminus of the COBDR, south to Steamboat on the COBDR, and then leverage my Land Cruiser buddy Devon’s Steamboat Color Cruise Gunsight Loop, about which he says: “We assembled the Gunsight Loop as an easy [route] that meanders through some of the largest aspen groves in Colorado, while still ensuring that there are plenty of fishing opportunities to be had. Think of this loop as a teaser for places you’ll want to go back to.”

Once we get to Kremmling on the Gunsight Loop, we’ll head back toward Grand Lake, and through RMNP over Trail Ridge Rd. if weather permits, and back home.

There will be camping, and a hotel night in Steamboat to enjoy town.

Who: I’d like to limit this group to about 6-8 folks so that lodging doesn’t become mayhem, but let’s see how much interest there is. To be clear, I’m not an expert rider, or guide, or moto coach, or mechanic. So, you get what you pay for. It’s an adventure where we’ll take care of each other - not a guided trip. I’m not even familiar with the area we’ll be riding. That said, I want to do a pre-run in the coming weeks, so if you’re interested in a couple night pre-run let me know.

Weather: In the event we get rain (or snow), we’ll almost certainly be forced to change route or potentially cancel. Some of the Gunsight Loop becomes treacherous when it’s wet - deep peanut butter mud that will turn a chill ride into a miserable time.

Did someone say… hotel…

For one night.

Certainly interested but not sure I can do 5 days with my PTO schedule for the holidays. What is the difference between 3 and 5 days for this trip?

It’s just whatever folks can/want to do. I’m down for a 3 day.

@mulebarn we haven’t met and I am new to the group, only been on one group ride. I know Devon and have taken my 60 on a few of his Color Cruises. Awesome group. I hope to join some more BCADV rides when I am back in the USA later this month.

Whoah. Is that a Troopy? That’s awesome. And is the Heritage your current vehicle? Mine is a ok 60 that is mechanically very sound but getting the usual rust bubbles on the body. Looks awesome still and gets lots of compliments but far from perfect. No leaks though which took a lot of money and effort.

HZJ73 mid-wheelbase. I sold the Heritage to the last executive director of the Kand Cruiser museum in SLC. I’m a lowly Tundra owner now.

I’m still down for this ride, if @mulebarn is still doing it. Any updates, Gino? Happy to pitch in with planning or a mid-week pre-ride, too.

There was so little interest in this trip that I’ve kind of abandoned the idea. That said, if there remains some interest I’m sure we could probably pull together the route and get it planned.

I’m definitely interested, and have confirmed that I’m available from Wed 9/24 through the weekend, so I’m planning to either do this ride or something similar. Usually a great time of year for that area, and mixing in a little trout harassment with a ride is always fun. I think you’ve sketched out a pretty solid plan already—I’m up for as much or as little additional planning as others want. Left to my own devices I’d pencil in an early start Wednesday morning, pack the usual overnight stuff (including bare-bones fishing outfit), and maybe play the hotel thing by ear until a better weather picture emerges.

I like the idea, and I might want to do a one-day or maybe a one-night on Wednesday. But I have trouble with commitment.

So I’m watching this to see if it happens at which point I may latch on for a bit. I know that’s weak sauce but I’m not retired yet!

Friday-Sunday 9/26-28/25 it is: Thinking we can take a more direct route to shorten the distance to the Gunsight loop by taking Hway 14 to Gould then over Baker Pass to CR 21 to HWAY 125 to CR 28 intersecting the loop. Take route south and camp Thursday (FRIDAY) along the track in Routt Natl Forrest dispersed camping. Finish the loop Friday (SATURDAY) and get lodging near Kremmling that night. Back to front range on Saturday (SUNDAY). The 10 day weather forecast for Steamboat / Rand looks excellent Fri/Sun.

I’m for this if it’s Fri - Sun.

Let me see if I can pull it together on the domestic front and I will holler soon.
