Saturday May 30: 2nd Annual Red Feather Lakes Ride

Welcome to the 2nd Annual BCADV Red Feather Lakes ride! Last year was a huge turnout, and so much fun.

This year we’re doing this one a little differently. I’m posting the details, BUT, I’m calling on BCADV members to step up to lead the A and B rides. Rich is out of town, and I’m not leading the A ride. I’ll be on the back of the A ride. Plus, Rich and I really need others to step up to make this all work. Speak up if you’ll lead the ride.

Date: Saturday, May 30th

Time:

  • 9:00-20 — meet and greet, coffee and pastries

  • 9:20-25 — Riders’ Brief, will be given by the ride leaders

  • 9:30 — KSU. This is a hard start time, not a suggestion

What: 2nd annual Red Feather Lakes Ride. This is an open ride to the public, so if you’re aiming to become a BCADV member, this is a great way to earn that stripe. Last year, we had a great day out, and I’m excited to do it again.

Where: :round_pushpin:Spruce Confections, N. Broadway. Gas is available at the Shell a few blocks south on Broadway. Show up with a full tank, ready to ride.

Who: A & B riders. The B route on this ride quite easy, but perhaps not if you’re brand new. You can always ride pavement at meet up in Masonville, then again in Red Feather Lakes.

Route Overview:

A ROUTE: https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=9.2/-105.5438/40.7204&pubLink=vDRjFQmIqhwM8GxdkpKgZflU&folderId=8fd625f6-afad-4570-a0a7-308a5e7ef273

B ROUTE: https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=8.7/-105.3684/40.4718&pubLink=3bgtL4UmOlAvKJwTCDCDpg6s&folderId=82e53dfa-475b-4840-b588-7b71c0ef4598

We’ll roll out together and take backroads and dirt roads via the Dirty Carter route, making our way to Masonville. In Masonville, we’ll stop at the store/portapotties, and then split into A squad and B squad.

The A-route is “A” because of Old Flowers (IF it’s open by the time we do this ride!), and then the length of the loop we’ll be riding north of Red Feathers. Old Flowers is legit these days on a big bike. If you’re not sure, you can do the B-route below, connect with us in Rustic, and join us for the big loop north of Redfeather. After Old Flowers there’s nothing particularly challenging about the riding itself, just that it will be a full day. The A-Route will stop for a trail sammich at the fire tower at Deadman.

The B-Route: is a great scenic ride: Dirty Buckhorn, Pingree Pass, Poudre Canyon, Rustic, and then up to Redfeather. After that the route swings south again via a different route back to Rustic, then Poudre, Stove Prairie, Rist, and then around Horsetooth Rez.

Admin: Bring water, tools, snacks, lunch, and start with a full tank of gas. There is gas (and ice cream) in Rustic and gas (and ice cream) Red Feather Lakes. Bring your radios, programmed, charged, and on.

Is you in, or is you out?

Definitely a hmmmm…maybe from me.

Work will sneak in so if I can make it, it will be an early out for me.

Sadly, out! That day is the start of a family vacation. Looking forward to the trip report.

Monday bump, to get this on your radar.

@mulebarn did you post tracks for this that i cant find?

Ah, totally spaced posting them - been super busy. I’ll get 'em posted tomorrow. It’s the same as last year’s ride, more or less. The A group will need to figure out something to replace Old Flowers since it apparently isn’t open yet.

I have a trail off of Manhattan. Will either send you a waypoint to the entrance (it’s out and back), or a GPX of the trail

Possible A-route offshoot of this ride: Google Maps

Go up Manhattan road from Rustic to this pin, which is the entrance of a trail that takes you up and across the plateau above Kelly Flats. Go to this intersection and flip it: Google Maps

CoTrex says ^this^ route has a seasonal closure but…who knows. Maybe it’s open. The gate is right at the entrance off Manhattan so you’ll know pretty quickly

It’s a fun trail, just enough A-ride challenge. We did this last year but definitely did not take another route out that had us not opening a closed gate at the bottom the hill and through a neighborhood that we did not ride through…

Sorry I haven’t updated tracks - been swamped. I’ll get 'em posted today or tomorrow.

We still need ride leaders for this one! Please step forward. All you have to do is follow the line on your GPS, and voluntell someone to ride sweep with their radio on. This is easy.

Also: there’s a good chance I can’t do this ride now. Ten days ago I was on Switzerland with a buddy from out of town, and had to make a sudden maneuver because of an oncoming moto. I ended up having a get-off that I’ve been trying to ignore, but ten days in, the pain has not subsided and I’m thinking it is likely a lateral gastrocnemius strain. Walking/cycling/riding all hurt like a mofo, so being on the moto all day long doesn’t seem wise…

Aww shoot, sorry to hear about the hopefully minor injury there Gino.

I’m happy to lead whichever route needs it. I’d prefer to lead the A route but also happy to do B instead. I’m hoping to do a quick evening scouting ride to check Old Flowers and Rich’s suggested A route add-on just past Rustic. If I am able to make it up there this evening I’ll be sure to report back.

Thanks!

The add-on from Manhattan is better than OF, in my opinion. It’s more fun and less bomb crater-ey

Still waiting on parts for the Mighty 1090 so I’ll not be able to join/lead/open gates this year.

Did just a bit of scouting for the route this evening. I wasn’t able to make it up past Rustic before losing daylight today but did find a short spicy loop up on Pennock Pass we could add into the A route for Saturday.

Hey team -

I added the tracks that Rich made last year for this ride to my original post. Last year, we started at Elite. You’ll start at Spruce instead, even though the track says otherwise.

I’m genuinely sorry for dropping the ball on getting this done. I’ve been super slammed in non-moto life, and simply haven’t had time to sit down and redraw a few things to start from Spruce. It’s a good thing you’re all grown-ass adults who know what to do!

Ima try to show up at the ride start on Saturday just to say hi, but I hope y’all have fun. Bummed to miss this one.

Do you have it in GPX ?

It won’t open to me

Thank you

@Beni7542 is correct, It will not open big G…

I’m making a few changes to the A route for tomorrow based on the Old Flowers seasonal closure. Give me another 20 minutes or so and I’ll upload all the .gpx files for both A and B route.

Alright, got the previous routes updated with just a few revisions. If you already grabbed last years routes you’ll still be fine.

  • The routes now start at Spruce Confections in Boulder like the main post says.
  • The A route will go over Pennock Pass rather than Old Flowers. I did add the short 4 mile Greer Road loop from my screenshot above. It’s a steep climb but a decent road, can be easily bypassed if anyone wants to opt out. Going up Pingree road we’ll pass by the West side of Old Flowers where it’s easy to check if the gate is open. I’d be open to hitting this at the end of the route if it is open and anyone else is interested.
  • I added the out and back section Rich suggested going toward Kelly Flats after Rustic.

I’ll lead the A route tomorrow, just need someone for the B route. I’m seeing a slight chance of rain in the early afternoon and nice cool weather for riding in the mountains. See y’all there!
