The "Best of the COBDR" Pre-Ride Report

Tomorrow 14 riders and I will ride from Lyons at 7am, for 5 days of the “Best of” the COBDR.

The Plan:

  • Day 1: Lyons to south of Eagle. Part of the route is closed due to the fires so I’ve made an alternate route that will drop us into Vail, then Eagle, the south of town to camp.

  • Day 2: Over Hagerman, lunch in Leadville, over Weston, then into Fourmile. Camp in Fourmile, dinner in town.

  • Day 3: Cottonwood, Cumberland, Tincup, Pitkin, Los Pinos, camp about 45min outside of Lake City. Setup base camp

  • Day 4: Alpine Loop, on unweighted bikes. Lunch in Ouray, dinner in Lake City,

  • Day 5: return via Black Sage, Old Monarch, Salida, Aspen Ridge, Guarnella.

You can track us on my InReach tracking page.

Admin:

  • We will not ride as a 15 rider conga line. Instead, the ride will organically break into smaller teams of 2-4 riders, who will use the Rally Points I’ve designated to maintain intra-group accountability. I did this with a group of 20 riders years ago, riding the Continental Divide from MX to Canada, 3000 miles of dirt. It works.
  • Everyone is riding with an InReach, radio, 1 gallon of water, tools, snacks, etc.
  • Looks like we’ll be bouncing in and out of rain all week, which is ironic after a very hot and dry summer. No dust!

I’ve asked the crew to post their pre-ride bike pics in this thread, and I’ll update this thread as I can throught out the week.

I’m jealous with this cool weather, fellas. Enjoy it - it’s a world class adventure ride.

I don’t think anyone will need it, but I will be on standby if we have some sort of non-emergency catastrophic bike thing. Several of you have my phone number (or messaging me here), so you know what to do if there is a bike haul in order.

…should also be in your highest gear and valve stems at 6-o’clock :winking_face_with_tongue:

And valve stems aligned with manufacturer logo on the tire. And if you look through the valve stem hole on your rim, you should see the logo on the hub.
