The Suspension Thread

One of the hardest concepts for me to get my head around when I started riding dirt more was suspension, and how sag, rebound, and compression (as three foundational concepts) worked together (or against each other) to create whatever ride sensations I’ve experienced in various situations. I have a much better than basic understanding now, but there’s a world of knowledge that still lies far beyond my grasp. Today, @ChrisMunro and I took our 701s to Factory Edge for some fork work, and a bit of lowering, and it had me thinking about how little I know still about the mechanics and physics of suspension, even though I know more than I did even one year ago.

Here are a couple of videos that I’ve gone back to several times. The first Riemann video is a more general (and great!) ergonomics/setup guide, but in typical Riemann fashion, he also gives minimal no-bullshit advice on basic suspension setup. The second video is a more process-based hands on “Take these steps” video. What are some others you’ve found valuable?

(By the way, on the Riemann video, I followed his handlebar/grips advice, and didn’t roll my handlebars forward as a test… in January. And I’ll never go back. For me it was a game changer for being comfortable in an athletic standing position. Similarly, he taught me to move my clutch and brake levers inward toward center so that my pointer and middle finger are sitting on the outward most point of the lever, as that’s where the best LEVERage is. Also a game change for clutch/throttle control, and hand fatigue.)

Speaking of suspension, I just installed a lighter KTech spring in my shock and the bike rides a lot better. Especially uphill washboards where I felt like I had no traction with the stock spring. Fork springs might next!
