If I’m able to make it (50% at the moment, just depends on work schedule), I’ll be towing my 30’ toy hauler

From a reading of this thread, you could probably get your expenses paid by renting out a couple of cots in your toy hauler

$$$$$$$$

I’ll be coming in my pickup with a topper and a twin mattress in the bed, and the 450 on a hitch rack. Easy peasy.

Would love to do white rim with you on my T7 preferably either the 19th or 20th (Thursday / Friday) before the weekend traffic comes in.

As we said earlier in this thread, we want to make this a successful club event, offering organized rides, ride leaders, etc, rather than a random “let’s chase each other in the desert” kinda experience. In addition, it sounds like this will be a first time in Moab experience for many of you. So Da Board has brainstormed a schedule of rides to accommodate the intent of the weekend and to introduce members to some of the Greatest Hits of Moab, (mostly) suitable for both DS and ADV riders.

Below is an 80% fleshed out plan. We’ll firm this up, create tracks, etc.

Thursday:

PM sand riding class, probably about 6p, for anyone who can make it.

Friday: White Rim Trail

Many want to do White Rim, it’s a classic, but it’s a long day, so we’re doing it on Friday as a club ride when everyone is fresh.

A-Ride: Full Monty White Rim

  • Counter clockwise, entering from Gemini Bridges area. This puts a sand section by the river on the front end of the day.
  • There could be a B-ride Full Monty, especially if on DS bikes. Just a separate group at a slower pace

B-Ride: White Rim, Out and Back

  • Enter WR from Potash and ride counterclockwise to Murphy Hogback campground. Flip it and return same way. Note that the climb up to the campground is probably the only technical bit on the WR. It’s a kinda loose, momentum type climb.
  • Alternate way out would be to climb Shafer up to the plateau, then go back to Moab via Long Valley.

Would be cool if both groups came together at the campground and A rode out with B. No idea if the timing works.

Saturday: Onion Creek, Castle Valley, Kokopelli, Sand Flats/Pavement Loop
Another classic and doable on ADV bikes, nearly all abilities on a DS.

  • Pavement towards town, left at the bridge, ride along the river to Onion Creek
  • Onion Creek is super fun and scenic with about 5000 small little water crossings.
  • Comes out in Castle Valley, also super scenic. Option to flip it here and return the same way. This is a great, easy day. Or…
  • Continue and the trail intersects Kokopelli. Climbs up into the trees, then intersects pavement highway with great views of the valleys and deserts north and east.
  • Can take pavement all the way back into town, or…
  • Re-intersect Kokopelli. Drops down and intersects Sand Flats, which takes you into town.
  • A-Ride option to get your hooligan around on Slickrock Trail, Finns and Things, etc.

Sunday: Rich’s Wild Ride or Hurrah Pass / Chicken Corners

A: Rich’s Wild Ride

  • Route TBD, but fun sand, hill climbs, slot canyons, etc Maybe out to dunes to the north, or Dead Cow Wash, Mary’s Trail (backcountry slickrock, follow the painted dots trail).
  • DS bikes or A+ riders on big bikes
  • Either early morning start from camp or pack up and stage vehicles closer to the actual route, saving about an hour of riding on each end of the actual ride.

B: Hurrah Pass, Chicken Corners
This is another classic with awesome view, a little bit of everything and nothing too gnarly. It’s also an out and back, so easy to keep people together.

There’s just a TON of great riding in the Moab area and this is our first club trip out there. We want to make this a successful trip for the club. In the future there will be opportunities to explore more, sample the gnar, etc.

Let us know what you think of the plan.

Oh wow! Very cool. Thanks for putting that together. Makes me excited. Is the Saturday “A-Ride option to get your hooligan around on Slickrock Trail, Finns and Things, etc.” instead of the other ride or in addition too?

That stuff is at the very end of Sand Flats, just above Moab so would be an addition at the end of the ride.

So we do rock paper scissors in the parking lot and make the call

I believe you need a permit for white rim nowadays. Depending on how many Muldoons show up, it may be a good idea for half the club to go on Friday and the other half on Saturday just in case not everyone can get permits.

I haven’t ridden white rim so I’m sure @Rich_Strauss has some very good reason for front loading it.

Yes. Permits needed and you can hook them up online. I’ve never heard of anyone not getting a permit.

I’ll look into the process more.

The whole loop is about 120-130mi. It’s epic, scenic, but it does add up for a long day. It’s a bucket list loop so makes sense to do it first when people are fresh.

Thanks for planning this! Would maybe be interested in a B group WR full Monty but I’m concerned about how long that would take.

I’ve done it both ways, online and in person. They releasing half the permits online 1-2 days before the target day and then reserve half for last minute in-person permits. Last April we showed up at 730 to the ranger station, they open at 8, and it was no issue. It made sense to start early anyways since it’s a fairly long route with lots of good stops.

It’s an epic scenic ride. Have fun!

The NPS issues 50 permits per day for WR. Technically group size is limited to 3 vehicles on WR, including motorcycles. Although you can typically get away with 4-6 for a MC group. Depending on how many folks want to do it we will need to break into smaller groups and stagger them. 30 minutes between groups is recommended, 1-3 miles apart is plenty.

Or we just don’t know each other. Tape over any BCADV stickers

We can do a time trial start, slowest to fastest, with 3 min gap between riders. Winner buys donuts for the group at Doughbird in downtown Moab.

I’ve done it at speed on the 701 in not many hours. Good group will take most of the day - Mine included up Potash to Shafer climb, to the visitor center for a permit then out of town to the NW start. CCW route was great. Very few bikes in April that year.

It’s gonna take as long as it takes so an early start is always best. Also, there is no water and of course no gas on the loop. A handful of vault toilets.

If it’s your first time is worth an early start so you have time to stop for pics, lunch on the trail, etc
