BCADV Spring Moab Weekend: March 19-22, 2026

I don’t know for sure as I don’t ever track it. But it’s a stock xcw and the internet claims 80-100mi. I’ve got a bigger tank and a couple MSR bottles. Was hoping to get away without putting the bigger tank on and just use the MSR bottles for extra range. But seems like it may be the safer bet to get the bigger tank.

Saturday is a plated ride also. We ride north along the river, pavement, to Onion Creek. Then Sand Flats into town is plated. But, can hide in the group, we just don’t know you. Trail gas is $20/gal. If you already own the bigger tank, safer to just put it on.

Sunday is a dirt bike ride. 60-80mi depending on what we do

I’m plated so that’s no problem.

UT OHV rider course and non resident OHV registration links below. The OHV rider education course needs to be completed for UT OHV registration. You get a course completion certificate that you are supposed to carry with you along with your registration.

I had to do this to be a guide at the Green River Rally last year. I believe you need to complete the education course regardless of whether you get an OHV permit. My understanding is that the UT permits are similar to CO permits in that even if you are street licensed you still need an OHV permit to ride on OHV trail systems where a street license is not required.

Practically, I do not know if any of this matters as there a a bazillion acres and not a lot of BLM or NPS staff for enforcement. In general, I try and know the rules and do my best to follow them when riding in a new location. I also don’t mind spending money on OHV registration as those fees go toward trail maintenance and construction budgets.

Thanks Jason - this is helpful.

I took the “test” and got my permit a few years ago. Don’t know if I’d need to re-up but I will anyway.

Ive asked this at the visitors center in moab btw, and they said opposite. If you are plated, no OHV needed. They physically did not let me buy a tag.

I had that experience in about 2021 or so, said I didn’t need or would sell me a tag. I believe the lady working the desk told me to “go away,” with a smile  Then this “online test to get a permit” process was created.

I’ll probably be tent camping for some and renting a pop up for the rest. I’ll be out there with my son’s Scout troop but my wife and I want to stay longer. I’m hoping to meet up for one of the days to ride

The NP visitor center? You can only take a plated vehicle into the NP boundary, so no OHV permit is required.

I think the latest regulations were implemented in 2024.

I don’t know if an OHV permit would be required for the Saturday route Rich outlined. Sunday’s ride with Dead Cow, Marry’s, Enduro Loop, the dunes, ETC would.

no, regular Moab one. For all the other BLM/OHV trails out of the parks. No OHV permit needed if you are plated, unlike CO. At least that’s what they told me when I tried to buy one

If you are over 18 the UT OHV education cert is good for a life time.

That is not the case any longer according to the UT DNR website. I think they realized they were missing out on a bunch of money in permit fees from out of state residents, so their legislature rescinded reciprocity with CO in the vehicle code which prompted the DNR to require OHV permits.

Don’t wait to get your OHV stickers, y’all. I just renewed online and they stated it could take up to 20 business days to receive them.

I called the Utah number last May and spoke to someone in the office - they confirmed that you DO NOT need an OHV permit if you are plated. I was just in Utah (St George) a couple weeks ago and got checked by a ranger at the OHV parking lot. My plated bike was sufficient.

Interesting. It specifically says on the UT DNR site that an OHV permit is required for plated vehicles to ride on designated OHV trails. The Green River Rally organizer told me it was required too. If only a license plate is sufficient that’s great. Now I want my $30 back UT! LOL

Agree, it was totally confusing as I saw a few different things in different locations on the Utah websites - that is why I called and spoke with a person. Who knows, maybe that person was wrong and the ranger was nice a couple weeks ago??!! I will save my $30 for now…

Oh, and the ranger did ask for the education certificate as well.

I found it. Third question down. No permit needed if plated in home state.

I think the confusion comes because they classify “street legal OHV/plated OHV” and “street legal motorcycle” as different things. Dirt bikes are no longer “OHVs” if plated in another state.
